Review: Fang by James Patterson

This spring break has given me much more time to add little extra things to my blog that I wouldn't normally have time for. For example, I created a button! Many of the big YA fiction blogs out there in the blogosphere have cute and unique buttons for other bloggers to pick up and take with them. So I thought I'd make my own Off My Bookshelf button - which is now in my sidebar!
And...today I'll be reviewing Fang by James Patterson.

Fang by James Patterson (the 6th book in the Maximum Ride series)
Released: March 15th, 2010

The Summary: "Being a kid with wings--constantly on the run--has never been easy, and Max and her flock are getting tenser than ever. First, on a trip to Africa, they meet a mysterious billionaire whose intense scrutiny of the flock makes her fear the worst. Then, a cryptic message from a young girl arrives, warning them "The sky will fall." And as if an impending apocalypse weren't bad enough, canny birdkid Angel makes a dire prophecy about Max's soul mate: Fang will be the first to die. Max's desperate desire to protect Fang brings the two closer than ever. But can the team weather the storm, or will the turmoil rip them apart for the last time?"

The Review: I love, love, love this series. It has such a unique concept, and the books appeal to both teenage girls and guys - which can be a difficult task for authors in this genre. Fang, unlike the previous five books, has a lot less action and more romance. We see the characters mature and get a look into who they really are - especially Fang, who up to this point, has rarely showed much emotion. Angel has always been one of my favorite members of the flock, but Patterson paints her in an entirely new light in this new addition to the series. She's no longer the sweet, innocent little bird-child that we knew in The Angel Experiment. The change was slightly abrupt, but I think it was a key element to the plot. But the most surprising part of Fang is the ending. Patterson leave us with a bunch of question marks, and we can only hope that he churns out the 7th book quickly!

The Grade: A

-Excerpts (the first couple pages) of Fang can be found here.
